Introduction
On this trip we will travel through the two great game reserves of Moremi and Chobe. The driving conditions vary according to the season but rain or shine this is a true African four-wheel drive expedition.
Moremi is encompassed by the channels of the Okavango Delta and therefore offers contrasting scenery and habitats from marshland to riverine forests and dry savannas. Due to the variety of scenery the game viewing is superb.
Chobe National Park has the Savuti area to the south and the Chobe river to the north. The Savuti area was once a marsh which is now dry, the dry savannas are presided over by several rocky outcrops where Bushman paintings can be viewed. The dry open savannas are home to big herds of elephant and large prides of lion are also to be found in this area.
The Chobe river and its flood plains are in lush contrast with Savuti. The game concentrates around the river which therefore offers superb game viewing at all times of the year but especially in the dry months of June to October.
At the end of the safari we reach Kasane, a small town at the north end of Chobe National Park and close to the border with Zimbabwe The tour ends in Kasane but there are optional activities of boat cruises and day trips and/ or connections to Vic Falls and Zambia. For those requiring it we provide a transfer to Kasane International airport.
The ITINERARY
Day 1: Into Moremi Game Reserve
Depart from Maun and after the first 47kms on a tarred road follow sand tracks to the ‘South Gate’entrance to Moremi. Large numbers of game may be encountered even before entering the reserve. For the birders rarities such as the Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane can be spotted on this section. Our time of arrival at Xakanaka campsite is open-ended depending on how long we stop along the way and the condition of the track but we will arrive well before sunset allowing plenty of free time to relax and enjoy this natural wilderness.
Day 2: Relaxing with hippos
Day spent on morning and late afternoon game drives with the option of a boat ride on the lagoon adjoining the campsite. Overnight camping in Moremi listening to the hippos in the nearby lagoon and usually, albeit further afield, lions roaring.
Day 3: Along the Khwai River into Chobe
Today we visit Khwai village and stop at some of the shops. The route to Chobe follows the Khwai river where game and rich birdlife abound against the backdrop of this picturesque riverine landscape. We pass through the Mababe depression and into Chobe Reserve. We head towards Savuti where we camp for the night.
Day 4: Around Savuti
We take an early morning game drive in the Savuti area with the option of visiting some Bushman rock paintings. In the late morning we will head north to the Chobe river front where we camp for the night.
Day 5: Savuti
Day 6: An abundance of elephants
Large herds of elephant and buffalo are likely to be encountered as we follow the sand tracks along the Chobe river bank. For most of the day we enjoy this wildlife spectacle arriving at our campsite in Kasane well before sunset. The camp for the final night of this safari is in the lush and peaceful surroundings of Kubu Lodge which overlooks the Chobe river.
